Prevention of Stereotypies via Pharmacology

Treatment of depression via serotonin-reuptake inhibitors
PC: Jill Jan

If an animal is in a depressive state, and depression is the cause of the stereotypic behavior, then the behavior can  be prevented by serotonin-reuptake inhibitor drugs (Mason et al., 2007).  The overall idea is to have a satisfied happy animal.

Downside:

If the medication is used on a long term run there is a risk for: long term health effects, consumer not willing to purchase the meat due to increased chemicals, addiction etc.
