{"id":3408,"date":"2019-08-19T13:16:42","date_gmt":"2019-08-19T20:16:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fccsartwork\/?p=3408"},"modified":"2019-09-12T10:24:06","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T17:24:06","slug":"3408","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fccsartwork\/2019\/08\/19\/3408\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond Borders Go Global Tanzania 2019: Community, Creativity, and Communications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Beyond Borders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Go Global Tanzania 2019: Community, Creativity, and Communications<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3409\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fccsartwork\/files\/2019\/08\/Go_Global_collage_final2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"722\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fccsartwork\/files\/2019\/08\/Go_Global_collage_final2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fccsartwork\/files\/2019\/08\/Go_Global_collage_final2-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fccsartwork\/files\/2019\/08\/Go_Global_collage_final2-768x554.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Beyond Borders: Go Global Tanzania 2019 exhibit shares a few glimpses into the works created by students who participated in the Go Global Tanzania: Community, Creativity, and Communications program Summer Term 1, 2019.\u00a0 The program enabled UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver students from all degree programs to immerse themselves in an interdisciplinary, intercultural context, considering questions such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">What does travel and travel writing enable us to explore \u2013 not only about the people and places we encounter, but also about ourselves?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">How are places represented and people\u2019s stories told \u2013 or not told?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">How can sharing diverse ideas and perspectives lead to understanding and mutual benefits across disciplines and across cultures?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">How can creative and cultural production inspire social change and community building, both locally and interculturally?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Go Global program, led by Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies English Instructor Joanna Cockerline, abounded with diverse experiential learning opportunities. Students visited villages, markets, and local schools as well as historic and culturally-significant sites.\u00a0 Activities ranged from participation in locally-led environmental initiatives to hands-on learning at artisans\u2019 workshops and roundtable discussions with prominent East African authors, filmmakers, artists, human rights leaders, and community activists. Students had opportunities to delve into academic projects alongside creative pursuits such as poetry, film, web design, photography, and multi-media art.<\/p>\n<p>The Beyond Borders: Go Global based on overcoming challenges of her past<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3415\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fccsartwork\/files\/2019\/08\/Edited-Rukia-presenting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"95\" \/>Rukia Kurwa<\/strong>, an Arusha-based artist, TED talk speaker, and founder of the artists\u2019 collective The Annoyin\u2019 Artist, further emphasized the power of cultural productions to inspire social change, understanding, and connectivity across borders<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whether exploring contemporary East African writing, film or art, discussing these works with their authors and producers, or immersing themselves in the rhythms of daily life in Tanzania, students who participated in the program all agree that the questions they asked of themselves are not uncomplicated ones \u2013 and are ones that will continue to
