Misunderstood Genius

Misunderstood genius.

Everything I need to know about teaching I learned from Calvin and his philosophical fur-ball friend Hobbes. Well, not everything. I need to take some pedagogy classes. Seriously. The genius of Bill Watterson’s characters, however, did instill in me a love for the child who doesn’t fit the mold. Misunderstood genius. Hallelujah for mold-breakers.

Somewhere along the line, someone got the idea we all needed to conform. Naturally, education became a means to squeeze unique individuals with diverse learning styles, creativities and ideas through a pedagogical meat-grinder, if you will, churning out mediocrity.

Fortunately, educators, the great ones that is, understand that a diverse classroom requires a mindset that recognizes the multiplicity of intelligences, celebrates them and honours each. And you know what? It’s possible.

I want to be a teacher because I want to learn how to celebrate misunderstood genius in the classroom.

Oh, and this is my blog.
