{"id":618,"date":"2012-11-20T11:54:26","date_gmt":"2012-11-20T04:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fishonfarms\/?p=618"},"modified":"2012-11-20T11:54:26","modified_gmt":"2012-11-20T04:54:26","slug":"final-group-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fishonfarms\/2012\/11\/20\/final-group-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Final Group Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">O<\/span><\/strong>ur final group <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">analysis<\/span><\/strong> was guided by the following objectives:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identifying the key problems and <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">social norms<\/span><\/strong> within the communities we visited<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Prioritize and group the problems<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Look at existing resources within the communities<\/li>\n<li>Identify activities we can modify in our existing work plan<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Based on the research define what <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">empowerment<\/span><\/strong> of females within these communities will look like<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Action Plan: where do these finding fit? How can we include them into our work plan? How can we make them happen?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>First we wrote down the problems and <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Social norms<\/span><\/strong> which stood out to us in both field visits. We then posted all of those findings on the board, and together categorized them into clusters. We ended up with four main categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Household Equity<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Social Norms<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Livelihoods<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Nutrition<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fishonfarms\/files\/2012\/11\/IMG_0419.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-619\" title=\"IMG_0419\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fishonfarms\/files\/2012\/11\/IMG_0419-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fishonfarms\/files\/2012\/11\/IMG_0419-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fishonfarms\/files\/2012\/11\/IMG_0419-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In groups we identified the main issues in each category and the role <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">cultural beliefs<\/span><\/strong>, <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">social norms<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">practical matters<\/span><\/strong> (such as access to resources) play. Combining these findings with the suggestion we had received from the respondents, we set about finding activities that could be incorporated into the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Fish on Farms<\/span><\/strong> strategy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fishonfarms\/files\/2012\/11\/IMG_0420.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-620\" title=\"IMG_0420\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fishonfarms\/files\/2012\/11\/IMG_0420-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fishonfarms\/files\/2012\/11\/IMG_0420-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fishonfarms\/files\/2012\/11\/IMG_0420-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I will use my group\u2019s findings to demonstrate what the process involved and what the conclusions looked like. Please keep in mind that the following solutions are from our initial impressions only and do not represent the final results.<\/p>\n<p>In my group we focused on \u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Household Equity<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and identified three areas that needed improvement:<\/p>\n<p>i-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reducing the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">burden<\/span><\/strong> of <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">household chores<\/span><\/strong> on women<\/p>\n<p>ii-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reduce <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">alcohol consumption<\/span><\/strong> of men<\/p>\n<p>iii-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Involve women in <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">household<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">decision<\/span><\/strong> making<\/p>\n<p>We proposed the following as means of achieving these goals<\/p>\n<p>i-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reducing the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">burden<\/span><\/strong> of <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">household<\/span><\/strong> chores on women<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">Involve men in the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">training<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">education<\/span><\/strong> sessions so they are more aware of what the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">household chores<\/span><\/strong> involve. In the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">training<\/span><\/strong> sessions take a <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">proactive approach<\/span><\/strong>; for example have the men prepare a meal. This way the men can experience what the process involves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>ii-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reduce <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">a<\/span><span style=\"color: #003366;\">lcohol consumption<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">role play<\/span><\/strong>, involve the men in the discussion about <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">alcohol consumption<\/span> <\/strong>and try to obtaining their opinion and identify circumstances that lead to drinking. For instance what are the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">social pressures<\/span><\/strong> that lead to drinking? Concurrently we can put a strong emphasis on the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">potential<\/span><\/strong> of the money that is spent on alcohol; we will add up the amount spent on alcohol within one year and talk about what they could use that money for ( ie. Farming equipment).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>iii-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Involve women in <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">household<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">decision<\/span><\/strong> making<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">In our research we found that women can make small daily <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">decisions<\/span><\/strong> such purchasing household ingredients. However, when it comes to making bigger <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">decisions<\/span><\/strong> such as selling <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">household<\/span> <span style=\"color: #003366;\">assets<\/span><\/strong> they do not have authority.\u00a0 We attributed this to two factors: 1- A lack of income from women, 2- Lack of <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">confidence<\/span><\/strong> in <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">decision<\/span><\/strong> making.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">empower<\/span><\/strong> the women we hope to generate income through the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Fish on Farms<\/span><\/strong> project. We will complement this by <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">training<\/span><\/strong> the women in <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">book keeping<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">budgeting<\/span><\/strong>. To enhance the women\u2019s confidence levels we concluded that it is important to recognize their achievements and reward good <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">decisions<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While coming up with these solutions our goal was to involve all members of the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">household<\/span><\/strong>, since it is the <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">household as a unit<\/span><\/strong> which can drive the change and not individual members.<\/p>\n<p>The next step of the<strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"> baseline gender analysis<\/span><\/strong> is to start <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\">coding<\/span><\/strong> all of the summaries from our interviews on the field, and this will involve nothing more than an able body (ie. me), a laptop, and a long list of summaries to review.
