{"id":3,"date":"2013-06-06T00:59:34","date_gmt":"2013-06-06T07:59:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/flexiblelearning\/?p=3"},"modified":"2020-07-17T00:49:21","modified_gmt":"2020-07-17T07:49:21","slug":"social-media-helps-in-student-collaboration-and-participation-in-and-out-of-classroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/flexiblelearning\/nisha\/social-media-helps-in-student-collaboration-and-participation-in-and-out-of-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Social media helps collaboration and participation among students &#8211; in and out of classroom."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/nishamalhotra\/files\/2013\/06\/Screen-Shot-2013-06-06-at-12.02.26-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/nishamalhotra\/files\/2013\/06\/Screen-Shot-2013-06-06-at-12.02.26-AM-300x221.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This 4th\u00a0year undergraduate course, in the Economics Department, is required for all graduating students majoring in Economics.\u00a0Most students come into the course excited about applying their skills learned from four years of undergraduate work to a real issue, through forming a research question and answering it by analyzing data.\u00a0From the beginning, interactions between the professor and other classmates are encouraged. \u00a0Peer discussions, which often generate positive externalities, can lead to a greater understanding of the costs and benefits of various policies and behaviors (Van Den Berg, Admiraal, &amp; Pilot, 2006).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Having a place to post comments and participate without the public eye encourage involvement from the shy student and this has also been documented earlier (Larson, B.E. &amp; Keiper, T.A., 2002). The idea of a Facebook page came from my students in the first year undergraduate class &#8211; who after having created a Facebook group for the class invited me to join the group to help them with some practice questions.<\/p>\n<p>This module helped achieve what face-to-face, three-hours a week interaction could not.
