Back Health Assessment

Strong abdominal and back muscles, ligaments, and tendons are needed to properly align the spine and pelvis and promote good low-back health. Tests measuring muscular flexibility, waist circumference, abdominal muscle and back extension endurance and physical activity level, compromise the composite back fitness score. Muscular flexibility is the ability to move a joint freely through its full range of motion without injury. The Sit and Reach test measures flexibility in the lower back and hamstrings, which is important to maintain full range of motion and curvature in the spine. Waist circumference measurements are used to determine the level of risk associated with excess weight compressing the spine. Strong abdominal and back muscles are important in the prevention of low-back pain as they help stabilize the core during movement. Partial curl ups, performed at a set pace, are used to determine abdominal muscle endurance. Endurance of the back muscles is tested using the Biering-Sørensen method, which requires an individual to support their upper body in the air while their legs are fixed on a table. Finally, a questionnaire is used to determine the individual’s physical activity level, as it plays an important role in reducing low-back pain.
