{"id":40,"date":"2011-08-03T14:36:18","date_gmt":"2011-08-03T22:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fong\/?p=40"},"modified":"2011-08-14T21:11:17","modified_gmt":"2011-08-15T05:11:17","slug":"playing-with-glogster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fong\/2011\/08\/03\/playing-with-glogster\/","title":{"rendered":"Playing with Glogster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s module is all about <em>Creation<\/em> and we were tasked with going out there and creating something!\u00a0 After reading fellow student Jessica&#8217;s recent blog post on <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/foshaugsocialmedia\/2011\/08\/01\/using-glogster-for-readers-advisory\/\">Using Glogster for Reader&#8217;s Advisory<\/a>, I was inspired to have a go at using Glogster myself. \u00a0 This tool can be used to essentially create dynamic online posters with animation, sound, video, and hyperlinks that can be shared\/embedded through a variety of social media means. \u00a0Jessica quickly saw the potential in using Glogster as an interactive reader&#8217;s advisory tool, creating a Glogster poster (a glog?) with historical fiction reads for teens.<\/p>\n<p>I look for any excuse to shoehorn one of my favourite bands The White Stripes into anything, so naturally the glog I threw together showcases the collection of White Stripes material at the Vancouver Public Library. \u00a0In retrospect, the VPL holdings for White Stripes material is fairly\u00a0meager with limited availability so it likely wouldn&#8217;t be an ideal candidate for promotion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"visibility: hidden; width: 0px; height: 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/c.gigcount.com\/wildfire\/IMP\/CXNID=2000002.0NXC\/bT*xJmx*PTEzMTI*MDcyMjE2NjAmcHQ9MTMxMjQwNzIyNDYzMyZwPTIyMTYzMSZkPSZnPTImbz1kZmI4NjM5ZmI3ZWI*MThhYjg4\/ZDQ5M2IwYzllN2EwZSZvZj*w.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"380\" height=\"514\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glogster.com\/flash\/flash_loader.swf?ver=1309171952\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allownetworking=\"all\" allowscriptacces=\"always\" wmode=\"window\" flashvars=\"sl=http:\/\/www.glogster.com\/flash\/glog.swf?ver=1309171952&amp;gi=21833003&amp;ui=9318152&amp;li=3&amp;fu=http:\/\/www.glogster.com\/flash\/&amp;su=http:\/\/www.glogster.com\/connector\/&amp;fn=http:\/\/www.glogster.com\/fonty\/&amp;embed=true&amp;pu=http:\/\/www.glogster.com\/blog-thumbs\/15\/21\/83\/30\/21833003_2.jpg?u=a29af18328e25c8c2c56c3cb9be627b1&amp;google_analytics_url=http:\/\/www.glogster.com\/js\/glogsterGA.js&amp;si=x&amp;gw=3,8,0&amp;gh=5,1,4\"><\/embed><\/p>\n<p>The drag &#8216;n drop interface is pretty intuitive, if a bit clunky (particularly on a small screen). \u00a0It requires no programming or experience with graphic design since one simply uses preset images\/animations\/etc. or uploads their own content. \u00a0What I found cool was that Glogster works well in conjunction with VPL&#8217;s Bibliocommons catalogue in that you can directly link to item records, so each of the items in my poster will take you to the page where you can place a request. \u00a0Naturally, there are design contraints in the ability to fully customize certain elements and I occasionally had to fight to make it do what I wanted to do instead of what <em>it<\/em> wanted to do (though this is no different than PowerPoint or any other tool&#8211; negotiating affordances!). \u00a0Overall, it&#8217;s a pretty nifty tool that brings down barriers to easily\u00a0creating flashy widgets and has potential as a library tool for highlighting its collection. \u00a0It would also be a good tool to direct young patrons toward to make their own creations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s module is all about Creation and we were tasked with going out there and creating something!\u00a0 After reading fellow student Jessica&#8217;s recent blog post on Using Glogster for Reader&#8217;s Advisory, I was inspired to have a go at &hellip;
