{"id":105,"date":"2012-10-28T17:58:09","date_gmt":"2012-10-29T00:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fredericho\/?p=105"},"modified":"2012-11-19T05:15:37","modified_gmt":"2012-11-19T12:15:37","slug":"105","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fredericho\/2012\/10\/28\/105\/","title":{"rendered":"RE: Target \u2013 New Entrant to the Canadian Market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a response to Derek Kwan&#8217;s blog post about Target&#8217;s expansion into Canada, which can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/dkwan\/2012\/10\/08\/target-new-entrant-to-the-canadian-market\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his post, Derek suggests that Target&#8217;s expansion to Canada will succeed and that the chain will be a threat to stores like Wal-Mart, Sears, and Old Navy. However, one important thing to note is that Target\u00a0<em>is<\/em> the new entrant to a competitive market where the major competitors have already established a very strong foundation. Target, on the other hand, might experience many issues through their expansion.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Target Locations\" src=\"http:\/\/postmediacanadadotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/will-map-2-e1342128783250.jpg?w=660&amp;h=330&amp;crop=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Target will be opening 125 locations spread throughout Canada.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Supply chains might be more difficult to handle due to the added barriers of transportation, taxes, and tariffs. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.just-food.com\/the-just-food-blog\/canada-probes-target-expansion_id2215.aspx\">Average Canadian Target store sizes are also only 30% of the size of their American counterparts.<\/a> \u00a0Furthermore, moving to Canada will mean that <a href=\"http:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/2011\/10\/20\/target-aims-to-cater-to-canadian-tastes\/\">Target must adapt to different consumer behaviour and responses.<\/a> Whatever strategies served them well in the United States might not work as well in a different country.<\/p>\n<p>If Target&#8217;s Canadian venture does fail, it wouldn&#8217;t be the first company to cross the 49th parallel only to be forced to withdraw within a few years. Canadian restaurant chain Tim Hortons experienced just this with their attempts to expand into Boston, Massachusetts. The franchise <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wickedlocal.com\/swansea\/features\/x1270132572\/Tim-Hortons-closes-all-Southern-New-England-stores#axzz2Cf8oCrr3\">closed down thirty-six New England locations that it had opened after losing $4.4 million in one year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Target Loves Canada\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-X7TjW2THXgI\/T0bmIghi0cI\/AAAAAAAAAxM\/8Npa5WDI6Wc\/s320\/Target%2BHeart%2BCanada.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"233\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the advertisement above, Target loves Canada.
