To advertisers and marketers, however, Facebook is a massive management information system &#8211; an opportunity to collect information, preferences, and opinions from millions of users. How much of this happens with user consent, though?<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has changed (read loosened) its privacy policies many times over the past years. In fact, the website no longer uses a privacy policy but instead <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/252289\/facebook_changes_privacy_policy_again.html\">prefers to refer to their user agreement as a data-use policy<\/a>. The scandals don&#8217;t end there, however. Just over two years ago, Facebook&#8217;s implementation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-13577_3-20014168-36.html\">&#8220;Places&#8221; feature sparked controversy<\/a> when the application&#8217;s default setting tracked the mobile location of users.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Facebook Data Center\" src=\"http:\/\/static5.businessinsider.com\/image\/4d9dfd4a4bd7c8d239050000\/new-facebook-datacenter-in-prineville.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of Facebook&#8217;s data centers, where all user information is stored<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/technology\/digital-culture\/social-web\/privacy-flap-shows-facebooks-users-are-also-its-biggest-weakness\/article4567358\/\">Although users are beginning to be much more conscious about privacy on Facebook<\/a><a style=\"font-size: 15.454545021057129px; font-style: normal; line-height: 21.81818199157715px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/technology\/digital-culture\/social-web\/privacy-flap-shows-facebooks-users-are-also-its-biggest-weakness\/article4567358\/\">,<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 15.454545021057129px; font-style: normal; line-height: 21.81818199157715px;\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">they cannot stop the company from <\/span><\/span><a style=\"font-size: 15.454545021057129px; font-style: normal; line-height: 21.81818199157715px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20110929\/01390216130\/pretty-much-everything-related-to-you-facebook-is-recorded-your-facebook-permanent-record.shtml\">recording and storing almost everything they have ever shared<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 15.454545021057129px; font-style: normal; line-height: 21.81818199157715px;\">, <\/span>including private messages.<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0This, coupled with<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2212178\/New-privacy-row-Facebook-begins-selling-access-users-boost-ailing-profits.html\">very recent proof of the company selling personal information to third parties<\/a>, will have users thinking twice before posting anything on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Picture Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net\/hphotos-ak-ash4\/215919_10150154194867200_4141663_n.jpg\">Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To the 1.01 billion active users of Facebook, the website is a place to keep in touch with friends, share photos, and play games.
