Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8212; Phil Angell, Monsanto&#8217;s Director of Corporate Communications<\/p>\n<p>This quote was published in the <a title=\"Playing God in the Garden, New York Times, October 25th, 1998\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1998\/10\/25\/magazine\/playing-god-in-the-garden.html?pagewanted=all&amp;src=pm\" target=\"_blank\">October 25, 1998 issue of the New York Times<\/a>. As horrifying as these words may seem, they are merely the tip of the iceberg.<\/p>\n<p>Monsanto is an American multinational corporation in the field of agricultural\u00a0bio-engineering\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/food_and_agriculture\/science_and_impacts\/science\/current-uses-of-biotechnology.html\" target=\"_blank\">click here for more information<\/a>). With an <a href=\"http:\/\/investing.businessweek.com\/research\/stocks\/earnings\/earnings.asp?ticker=MON\" target=\"_blank\">$11.822 billion revenue in 2011<\/a>, Monsanto has a strong grasp on the agriculture worldwide.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fredericho\/files\/2012\/09\/monsanto11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-27\" title=\"Monsanto Evil\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fredericho\/files\/2012\/09\/monsanto11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"855\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fredericho\/files\/2012\/09\/monsanto11.jpg 855w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fredericho\/files\/2012\/09\/monsanto11-300x51.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/fredericho\/files\/2012\/09\/monsanto11-500x85.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Google search for &#8220;Monsanto&#8221; provides the auto-complete suggestion &#8220;Monsanto evil&#8221;. How did Monsanto develop such a reputation? There are a few major reasons:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"color: #333333; font-style: normal; line-height: 24px;\" title=\"Dangers of Genetically Modified Corn\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/c1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"115\" \/><\/p>\n<div>1) Monsanto does not test their genetically modified (GM) food for long term health effects\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.responsibletechnology.org\/health-risks\" target=\"_blank\">click here for more information<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>2) Not only does Monsanto not guarantee the safety of their product (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/tom-philpott\/2011\/07\/monsanto-superweeds-roundup\" target=\"_blank\">some of\u00a0which have proven to be harmful<\/a>) &#8211; they openly and irresponsibly\u00a0admit they care only about maximizing profits.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>3) Monsanto uses their patents to bully smaller businesses. GM seeds are often scattered by Monsanto&#8217;s transportation trucks and contaminate the crops of smaller farms. Monsanto then takes legal action against said farms (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.infowars.com\/judge-sides-with-monsanto-and-ridicules-small-farmers%E2%80%99-right-to-grow\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here for more information<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Genetically Modified Foods Coverage\" src=\"http:\/\/sitemaker.umich.edu\/sec006group5\/files\/this_map.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"466\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Monsanto claims that their technology prevents rising crop prices and starvation. <strong><em>They market themselves as a need, when they are possibly a threat!\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Should we be gambling with the long-term effects of GMOs?
