Construction Notes

We don’t have any “notes” on our project but here is an overview of the process we went through to create this project.

This research project was fairly easy to conduct once we had decided on a topic. Initially, we had trouble coming up with a topic because our first ideas were not very original. Eventually, we decided to look at how many people go to Sprouts throughout the week. We decided on this because it relates to the curriculum and pedagogy of our faculty; Sprouts is a student-run food co-op that sells and serves local and healthy products, which we feel accompanies the philosophy of Land and Food Systems well. We also chose to work with Sprouts because we thought that we could draw conclusions about business, health, and environmental issues with the topic we decided to research.

Once we had our research question, it was a simple matter of collecting data. One or two people would go to Sprouts on Mondays or Wednesdays and count the number of people that purchased food. On Fridays, Sprouts keeps their own tally, so we just asked them to note the hour between 12 and 1 on their tally sheet and we would collect their data at the end of the hour. That was extremely helpful because a lot of people got food on Fridays. We did not know they kept their own tally until one of our friends, who is a Board member at Sprouts, informed us. It was helpful to have a connection in Sprouts to communicate with about our project. We will be showing them our blog once it is finished because they are interested in our results as well.

Putting our blog together was also an easy task. We all got together one night to work on it. We each did work according to our strengths; the math-savvy member did the calculations and created the graphs while the computer-savvy member set up the blog. We all looked over and edited each other’s parts. Luckily, everyone in the group worked well together as a team and the project went smoothly.

Overall, this project was a fun experience and our group is satisfied with the outcome.
