Grades and Guidelines
Review Papers (Assignments 1 & 2) (25% each):
- Length: 10-12 pages plus references on a separate page (typed, double-spaced, font #12, one inch margins). The paper must refer to the 3 assigned readings plus the primary texts and another critical study of your own choice that represents one of the approaches studied in class (Psychoanalytic, Feminist, Gender Studies, Post-Colonial, etc.).
- The main goal: In order to develop an awareness of the ideological and conceptual tenets of a particular approach, you are invited to compare the different approaches used by the critics selected. Please comment on the strengths and shortcomings of each approach.
- This is a metacritical assignment, in which you are basically expected to synthesize, review, analyze, and/or reflect on the main arguments presented in the readings.
- How can you include your own ideas/analysis? Try to make connections between the readings: that is, compare different readings and see whether they complement each other, contradict each other, or whether they simply approach the topic from different angles. You are invited to question underlying assumptions (including your own).
- Late submission penalty: Papers submitted late without proper justification will lose 2% of the final mark per day.
NOTE: All papers must follow the latest MLA guidelines.
Attendance (5%):
Attendance is mandatory. If a student misses one class, it is his/her responsibility to contact another student to obtain the information about the missed class.
Blogs, Preparation, and Participation: (15%):
This mark is based on how well prepared students are when they come to class, as well as participation on the blog. In-class discussions must show evidence of knowledge of the assigned readings for each week, as well as an ability to identify and summarize the main arguments of each approach. Students will be responsible for identifying and learning the pertinent terms for each reading (there will be questions about terminology on the FINAL EXAM). Each week, you will write a 400-500 word response to (some part of) the reading on your blog, and comment on two of your classmates’ blog entries.
Academic Integrity:
Plagiarism is a serious crime. You are responsible for knowing the UBC rules regarding academic integrity (ignorance of the rules is no excuse):
