Every year we encounter students who are facing unnecessary complications on their immigration applications and cannot begin their program as a result. To better avoid these situations, preparation and timing are key. You can apply for your co-op work permit at the same you apply for your study permit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apply online<\/strong>: this will be much faster and more efficient. Ensure your application is as complete as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If you are planning to come with your family or partner<\/strong>, please check in with<strong> RHL immigration consultant(contact information listed below) or UBC <a href=\"https:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/about-student-services\/international-student-advising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Student Advising<\/a><\/strong> in advance so we can guide you in any additional processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Plan to arrive early after check government regulations<\/strong> so you have plenty of time to organize your living arrangements prior to the program start (housing, phone, banking etc). You may be able to enter Canada at any time before your program starts if meet all <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travel-covid\/travel-restrictions\/covid-vaccinated-travellers-entering-canada#entry-vaccinated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entry requirements<\/a>.There is no specific timeline that is mandated, but in our experience officers can ask a lot of questions if you will be arriving more than 6-8 weeks before the start of term, so you should be prepared to discuss your reasons with an officer upon arrival, and demonstrate that your travel is non-discretionary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"color: black;\">\n<li><strong>Let us know<\/strong>\u00a0(askmba@sauder.ubc.ca) if you were denied a study permit or if you anticipate delays outside of your control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 ><a href=\"#additional-support-2\" >Additional support<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"additional-support-2\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><\/p>\n<p>If you have questions about life as an international student, International Student Advising is here to help. rel=\"noopener\">Apply for MSP as soon as you arrive in Canada<\/a><em>Please particularly note:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You must apply for the <a href=\"http:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/livewell\/health-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BC Medical Services Plan (MSP)<\/a> as soon as you arrive in Vancouver as there is a 3 month waiting period for BC MSP to take effect. <strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/topic.page?id=59DDCB8DB15241D899168C65EE095393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MSP premiums<\/a> are not included in your tuition and fees.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Until you are covered by MSP, you are automatically enrolled in UBC's <a href=\"http:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/livewell\/health-insurance\/imed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iMED<\/a> plan. iMED is a temporary basic health insurance plan required for new international students, and will provide you with health insurance coverage during the three month waiting period for BC's Medical Services Plan (MSP)<\/li>\n<li>All students (both international and domestic) are also automatically enrolled in and pay for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.ubc.ca\/student-services\/health-dental\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AMS\/GSS extended medical plan<\/a> through their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calendar.ubc.ca\/vancouver\/index.cfm?tree=14,267,784,0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">student fees<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>iMED information will be communicated by DCIC <strong>at the end of July.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phone plan<\/strong><br \/>\n<a Vancouver is very competitive\u2013 if you want to live <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouver.housing.ubc.ca\/other-housing\/off-campus-housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">off-campus<\/a>, it can be difficult to arrange this unless you\u2019re here in person, and stressful to do once the program has started \u2013 <strong>so plan to arrive
