Concern for the right treatment of animals has a long legislative history. Society has a clear stake in safeguarding animals from acts of cruelty. Human beings benefit from living in a society where cruelty is actively discouraged. Growing ethical concern for animals has been reinforced by considerable intellectual work on the status of animals. There is an emerging consensus among ethicists for fundamental change (AVMA, 2007).
Though there are numerous people who do not support the fur industry, and there are numerous designers and celebrities that still endorse fur fashion. Though many high end designers such as Gucci have announced they are going fur free, there are still numerous companies who source their fur from fur farms. Greater education is required to ensure that they understand where their fur is produced and the conditions of fur farms.
Though in the modern times there is a growing debate with the fur industry as many people argue that using fur is no longer a necessity. There are still many people who rely on fur farms as a source of income. Approximately two-thirdsĀ of theĀ furs produced in Canada comes from fur farms (Statistics Canada, 2012). With 289 fur farms located in Canada, the Canadian fur trade employs around 60,000 Canadians annually (Statistics Canada, 2013).
