The University of British Columbia (UBC), the Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice Undergraduate Students Association (GRSJUSA), and the F-Word Conference are all located on the tradition, ancestral, occupied, and unceded lands of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) peoples.
Vancouver and its surrounding areas occupy the overlapping lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Stó:lō Coast Salish peoples. This land is unceded, which is to say that it was never surrendered, relinquished, or handed over in any way by Indigenous peoples to Canada or British Columbia through a treaty or other means; it is sovereign and unsurrendered. We encourage readers to learn more about the histories and contemporary resistance of these Indigenous Nations on whose land we live and learn on (as a starting point, click on the hyperlinks to be taken to each Nation’s website). We acknowledge the ongoing effects of colonization on Indigenous peoples and nations, as well as the interwoven relations between settler colonialism, capitalism, cisheteropatriarchy and racism.
This blog was written by a group of settlers, we recognize our complicity in the settler colonial project here on Turtle Island. We want to use this space as a call-in to other settlers to understand our roles in supporting Indigenous resistance and resurgence as non-Indigenous allies.
