Aligned with this trend, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">recent<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\"> studies explore the adoption <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">impact<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\"> of AI technologies on firm performance. However, they predominantly <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">measure<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">firms\u2019 <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">AI <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">capabilities with <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">input (e.g., labor\/job posting)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\"> or output (e.g., patents)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">, neglecting to consider the strategic <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">direction toward<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\"> AI<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">in business operations<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\"> and value creation<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">. In this paper, we <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">empirically <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">examine how firms\u2019 AI <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">strategic <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">orientation affects firm performance <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">from the dynamic <\/span><span class=\"ContextualSpellingAndGrammarError SCXW139668 BCX0\">capabilities<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\"> perspective<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">. We <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">create a novel firm-year <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">AI strategic orientation<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">measure <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">by employing a large language model to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">analyze<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\"> business descriptions in Form 10-K filings and identify an increasing trend <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">and changing status <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">of AI <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">strategies<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\"> among U.S. public firms<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">Our long-difference analysis shows that AI strategic orientation is associated with greater operating cost, capital expenditure, and market value but not sales<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">, showing the importance of strategic <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">direction<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">toward<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\"> AI to create business value.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">By <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">further <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">dissecting firms\u2019 AI <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">strategic orientation<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\"> into <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">AI awareness<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">AI product orientation<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">, and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">AI process orientation<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">we find <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">AI awareness is generally <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">not related to performance<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">, that<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139668 BCX0\">AI product orientation is associated with short-term increased operating expenses and long-term market value, and that AI process orientation is associated with long-term increased costs and sales.
