8: HOSPITAL BASEMENT

I called up my mom and wished her a happy mothers day.

I think it’s the holidays that hit the hardest.

The home owner had their kids and grandchild over for dinner, so I stepped outside of the house. I didn’t want to get in the way of their family dinner.

I miss my mom.

5:05PM

The streets were empty, I’m not sure if it’s because of mothers day or if all Sundays are like this.

I was planning to go to Safeway to buy food for tomorrows breakfast, but they closed at 5:00PM.

I didn’t want to go back, so I walked to the hospital.

On the way, a few aboriginal people wearing rigged clothes stared me down.

Not even dinner time, yet the streets were dead.

It only took me 5 minutes to walk from my place to the hospital.

I thought there would be more activities in the hospital, but I was wrong.

The hospital was dead quiet, barely anyone around.

The 24/7 cafeteria was closed.

The name is as truthful as dogs in hotdogs

I forgot to bring my access card, so there were a bunch of areas in the hospital that were restricted.

I walked around the hospital trying to find the gym,

I wanted to ask the information desk for directions, but that was closed.

So I tried to remember the direction the girl pointed out for me last Friday,

she said there are two ways to get to the gym:

“You can either go through the main entrance of the building, walk across the streets, and the gym would be on the other side”

I tried that, but the buildings on the other side were “The Canadian Blood Centre” and “The Children Hospital”. I tried to go in both of the buildings, but both of them required an access card.

“The second option, is to go to the basement, go through the tunnel and you would find the community services building entrance, the gym is in there. ”

So I went down to the basement, and I got completely lost.

I almost wanted to leave bread crumbs on the ground, so I can find my way back.

Every turn looks identical; Every entrance looks similar

And the underground tunnel was empty,  dark, humid, had no reception and didn’t have security cameras anywhere.

I felt the adrenaline rush spike up to my brain as I walked deeper and deeper into the tunnel.

After 5 minutes of trying to figure out my current location,

I just gave up and turned back.

I remembered the rooms I passed by:

“Supply Room”, “Electrical Room”,and “Documentation Room”.

I’m pretty sure if I took a few more turns, I would hit the Morgue.

Since hospitals place morgues in basement levels, and I’ve seen surgeons go in and out with a depressed look.

I really need someone to show me around the city,

cause the places that I’ve been to aren’t really the prettiest place in Winnipeg, I’m sure of that.

I’m the worst tourist.

I should cross “Tour Guide” off my future job option.

“Let me take you guys to the most exciting part of the hospital: the morgue. Can I get an amen!”
