LAST DAY IN VANCOUVER

Hands still trembling while typing

I woke up at 4:00AM today, the first thought that shot thro
ugh my head was

“Why are you so dumb for traveling to Winnipeg”

I admit, the time I was offered to do an interview, I was just excited for the opportunity.

I never imagined I would get the position, I went into the interview with a light heart, trying to play everything cool.

By the time I got the offer for the position, I was busy with my midterms,

I didn’t even think twice, I said

“Yes! I would love to accept this offer”

It wasn’t until close to the final, I realized how high the crime rate at Winnipeg is, and how rural is it.

My safety is what that has been scaring me the most.

Winnipeg downtown is nothing like Vancouver downtown.

Correction,

Winnipeg is nothing like Vancouver.

Vancouver is the most beautiful city, placed right beside the pacific ocean, painted with mountains and coast lines.

Winnipeg is the most rural city, placed in the middle of the country, slapped across with acres of flat land.

I kept telling myself not to cry,

“It’s just for 8 months, you’ll come back”

But, I just broke down when I saw my friends leaving.

My friends are like a second family to me, we would always take good care of each other, but I never expected them to take such good care of me.

Christy got me a frying pan and a cooking pot because she knows that if I don’t have any of these utilities, I’ll just not bother to cook, and give up on eating entirely

Sandra got me 2 boxes of strawberries, and played 5 sad songs before she left.

Gary wrote me envelopes to read in times of need, and his screeching voice accompanied the 5 sad songs. Thank god, or it would have been too sad for me.

It’s a bitter taste to leave my family and friends behind in this beautiful city.

But, I need to think about the bright side of this opportunity.

1. McDonald’s is no longer the only work experience you have on your resume

2. You have a professional title before graduating

3. This is what you want to do, working in a lab in a hospital. You get this opportunity to try it out before graduating

4. You will grow up and mature, learn how to take care of yourself better, learn how to work with co-workers in a professional environment, and learn how to pick yourself up when you fall down.

You will get homesick, you will miss your family, you will miss your friends, you will miss the daily scenery in UBC, and you will definitely miss the window scenery right next to your desk.

But, you promised yourself, you want to get the most out of your university life.

What is life if it’s just 4 years of studying and nothing else. Go out there and gain some experience in life.

Winnipeg may not be the most beautiful town compared to other tourist places

But, Winnipeg is offering you an opportunity to do something you want to do.

Focus your attention on that, and prioritize that thought, and wash away all the negativities.

Stay safe, and contact your friends and family everyday you’re there

Don’t countdown the days you have until you return to Vancouver, it’s too painful for that.

Watch lots of movies and dramas, enjoy the test free life

Love,

Doris last day in Vancouver
