Welcome
Hello, my name is Belinda and I am a 5th year Geography – Environment and Sustainability student at the University of British Columbia. Welcome to my blog. Here I will be documenting the work that I complete in the course GEOB479 Research in Geographic Information Science, taught by Brian Klinkenberg. Below are short descriptions of the content that will be featured on this blog:
- In-Class Notes – weekly summaries of what was discussed in class,
- Labs – summaries of each lab completed throughout the semester,
- Class Presentations – a summary of my in-class presentations as well as comments on the presentations of classmates, and
- Final Project – coming soon…
Why GIS?
What I find most interesting (and challenging) about GIS is the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. As most GIScientist will tell you, GIS is a tool that can be used to solve problems in a variety of different fields– Ecology, Business, Archaeology and everything in between. In that sense, GIS is interdisciplinary in its application. What makes the science interesting is that it is also interdisciplinary in its execution. In order to use GISoftware to its fullest potential, GIScientists need to have a strong understanding the mechanics of the GISoftware as well as its capabilities. The former requires experience in computer science and the latter requires experience and knowledge in whichever field that is relevant to the problem at hand.
In summary, GIS interdisciplinary both in its application and its execution and that is what attracts me to the science.
Please join me as I navigate through the world of GIS.
