Reading and Thinking Critically
1. Define terms clearly
2. Consider multiple perspectives (points of view)
3. Examine arguments and assumptions underlying arguments
– Which claims are being made?
– Distinguish between claims and opinions (claims can be verified objectively)
– What assumptions underlie the claims?
– Do the claims support the conclusion(s)?
4. Assess strength of evidence
– Is there sufficient evidence to support the claims?
– Are the sources reliable and credible?
– What influence (if any) does the identity of the person/organisation have on the argument?
5. Make up your own mind
– Formulate an informed opinion on the topic (using your judgment on the reliability of sources and evidence, as above).
– Express a cogent argument based on your opinion.
