The two sides must disagree with what the other side says, not just the resolution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Relevance of debates<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develops critical thinking skills<\/li>\n<li>Similarity to essay writing<\/li>\n<li>Application to speaking in class\n<ul>\n<li>Discussion groups, seminars, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Compels students to involve themselves in a personal way in the material<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Argumentation<\/li>\n<li>Rebuttal<\/li>\n<li>Communication (verbal and non-verbal)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key strategies for winning a debate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Present strongly supported, cogent arguments.<br \/>\nb. Engage, acknowledge, and refute the arguments of your opponents.<br \/>\nc. Don\u2019t contradict yourself!<\/li>\n<li>Signpost \u2013 tell us what you are going to tell us, and then tell us what you told us!<\/li>\n<li>Think critically on your feet.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>How should your speech (&#8220;case&#8221;) be structured?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A. State the Resolution<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>B. State your Definition<\/strong><br \/>\n(1) Defined Term<br \/>\n(2) Defined Term<br \/>\netc.<br \/>\n<strong>C. Arguments<\/strong><br \/>\n(1) Tagline<br \/>\n&#8211; argument (premise, evidence, example, conclusion)<br \/>\n(2) Tagline<br \/>\n-argument<br \/>\n(3) Tagline<br \/>\n-argument<br \/>\netc.<br \/>\n<strong>D. Conclusion<\/strong><br \/>\nSum up Taglines and end with a flourish!<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. What are some of the key tasks for your group?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>STRATEGIZE<\/strong><br \/>\na. Decide on your interpretation of the resolution<br \/>\nb. Discuss and anticipate what the opposing team might argue<br \/>\nc. Decide which topics you will focus on (usually one or two per debater)<br \/>\nd. Research your topics as necessary and come up with specific arguments (** choosing the most powerful arguments is a good strategy**)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">e. Decide in which order you&#8217;ll present those arguments, and decide who has which role (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th debater)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>CRAFT YOUR ARGUMENT<\/strong><br \/>\nf. Write out your debating points<br \/>\ng. Practice: saying the debate out loud (make sure to time yourself &#8211; respecting the 5 minute time limit)<\/p>\n<p><strong>PREPARE FOR THE REBUTTAL<\/strong><br \/>\nh. Divide up responsibility for the arguments you think the other team is likely to make<br \/>\ni. Prepare counter-arguments<\/p>\n<p><strong>DURING THE REBUTTAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Focus on rebutting your opponent\u2019s strongest arguments<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t dwell too long on any one specific point \u2013 try to make a comprehensive critique<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>*Note &#8211; there is no way to completely prepare for the rebuttal &#8211; some of your thinking will happen on your feet during the debate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.
