{"id":694,"date":"2018-12-13T18:53:58","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T02:53:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/geog412\/?page_id=694"},"modified":"2019-08-27T11:23:41","modified_gmt":"2019-08-27T18:23:41","slug":"debate-structure-and-marking","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/geog412\/debate-structure-and-marking\/","title":{"rendered":"Debate: Structure and Marking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Length: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>5 minutes of initial presentation*<\/p>\n<p>2 minute rebuttal*<\/p>\n<p><em>*Both will be strictly timed, as per the rules of formal debating<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Content (Relevant, critical, sufficiently in-depth)<\/li>\n<li>Organization (Logical order of presentation of information)<\/li>\n<li>Style and timing (Pace, clarity, dynamism)<\/li>\n<li>Coherence and complementarity of presentations and rebuttals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Format:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Teams (4 people each) will debate one another in formal debating style, alternating between \u2018house\u2019 (pro) and \u2018opposition\u2019 (anti). After everyone has presented, each person will have the opportunity for rebuttal, speaking in the same order as the initial debate.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, if you have two teams of four people (X and Y) the order is:<\/p>\n<p>5 minute debate: X1, Y1, X2, Y2, X3, Y3, X4, Y4<\/p>\n<p><em>followed by<\/em><\/p>\n<p>2 minute rebuttal: X1, Y1, X2, Y2, X3, Y3, X4, Y4<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roles:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>X1 and Y1 have key roles: they define the parameters of the debate, including their team\u2019s interpretation of the resolution. They also explain the key claims in their team\u2019s argument, and summarize how the team will proceed to explain that argument. In addition, they may make their own argument.
