How did the Canadian Winter Olympic Committee find the best location in the Callaghan Valley near Whistler for the cross country ski event based on slope, elevation, landuse, wildlife considerations and accessibility? \u00a0For emergency planning in coastal cities, where are areas at risk to flooding in a tsunami or storm? What is the difference in housing affordability between Vancouver and Montreal?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Students will answer these questions by\u00a0learning the GIScience theory in lecture, and applying this knowledge in computer labs to real life scenarios of geographic analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Students completing this course will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">understand the theoretical underpinnings of Geographic Information Science (GIScience) as a discipline in support of geographic analysis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">have practical working knowledge of one GIS software package, ESRI\u2019s ArcGIS, using a variety of datasets in multiple contexts for geographic analysis (natural hazards, social geography issues of housing affordability, environmental impact assessments).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">understand the ethical implications of GIScience analysis inherent in issues of data quality, validity, reliability and biases in GIS processing and display.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">be able to critically assess products that result from GIS analysis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem; color: #000000;\">learn how to work in teams to explore with GIS real-world geographic analysis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">develop an portfolio which serves as a repository for structured reflection on their learning and can be re-purposed for a job search or graduate school application.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A complete list of course competencies and learning objectives can be found here: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/giscience\/files\/2018\/03\/LO-and-labs_2018.docx\">Learning Objectives for lectures and labs_2018<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This course is the first of many other GIScience\u00a0courses in Geography.
