they build community<\/li>\n<li>Citizens of the community, rather than external experts, are at the centre of development<\/li>\n<li>Leadership is distributed throughout the community (remember the Social Change Model of Leadership?)<\/li>\n<li>Meaningful engagement occurs through dialogue and active listening among community members<\/li>\n<li>Institutions exist to serve the community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Community Food Security<\/strong><\/span> &#8211;\u00a0all individuals in a community having access to affordable, safe, culturally appropriate, ecologically responsible and nutritionally adequate food at all times.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Food Insecurity<\/strong><\/span> &#8211;\u00a0the inadequate or insecure access to food due to financial constraints.<\/p>\n<p>There are\u00a0three classifications of food insecurity based on participants&#8217; responses regarding presence of food insecure situations in the household over the last 12 months:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Marginal<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Worry about running out of food and\/or limit food selection because of lack of money for food.<\/li>\n<li><em>Moderate<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Compromise in quality and\/or quantity of food due to a lack of money for food.<\/li>\n<li><em>Severe<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Miss meals, reduce food intake and at the most extreme go day(s) without food.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Food Justice<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; represents &#8220;a transformation of the current food system, including but not limited to eliminating disparities and inequities&#8221; that constrain food choices and access to good food for all.<\/p>\n<p>Four characteristics and principles of food justice to consider:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Acknowledging and confronting historical, collective social trauma and persistent\u00a0<em>race, gender, and class inequalities<\/em><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Designing exchange mechanisms that build communal reliance and control<\/li>\n<li>Creating innovative ways to control, use, share, own, manage and conceive of land, and ecologies in general, that place them outside the speculative market and the rationale of extraction<\/li>\n<li>Pursuing labor relations that guarantee a minimum income and are neither alienating nor dependent on (unpaid) social reproduction by women<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Global Food Security<\/strong><\/span> &#8211;\u00a0ensuring access to healthy, adequate, culturally appropriate food produced in an ecologically regenerative and socially just manner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>*All glossary terms were taken directly from the LFS 350 website*\u00a0 http:\/\/lfs350.landfood.ubc.ca\/ Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) guiding principles &#8211;
