New UBC Arts Courses

This is a apparently not news, but I figured it if I missed it, so could have you. Here is a list of the new UBC Arts courses, specializations and streams – hidden on the most recent CASS Update e-mail, at least if you have Hotmail, because you always have to choose to extend the message past your screen because they are mega wide.

Anyway, there are a couple of extremely interesting choices on their that make me wish I didn’t have so many requisites to complete. My parents work in land development and architecture, and the fact that there is a new Sustainability by Design course open for Arts students I can’t take is kind o killing me. It’s news to me that Arts students can take ENDS courses at all.

It also looks like there is quite a few new courses in languages and a couple in First Nations Studies, Visual Arts and Religion Studies, so if that’s your thing, make sure you skim that page before starting class in a few weeks.

A heads up to anyone who does take a look at the page, though – don’t get your hopes up over the Topics in Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities (ASTU 204A) class – if you take a look on the SSC it’s already been cancelled.

Some Comments on Reality for New Optimistic Commuters

– courtesy of an older, somewhat jaded commuter who would like to remind you that although going to UBC is pretty awesome, even as a commuter, there are harsh realities you will have to face beyond sitting in rush hour.

My dream for the long run involves travelling the world, having a meaningful and adventurous career and maybe my own hovercraft. My dream for the rest of my undergrad degree, however, has become a comfortable studio conveniently placed in the middle of campus and potentially overlooking the ocean. And I had it for a moment, until reality slapped me in the Continue reading

Ubyssey video on the Vancouver housing market

If you don’t check ubyssey.ca or follow them on Youtube (which is pretty unlikely because they only have 56 subscribers), you probably don’t know that the Ubyssey has been putting together some pretty high quality video features over the past while. The majority of their videos haven’t reached one thousand views, and over a third haven’t even reach a hundred (I’m so cool I counted). While it may seem like that could still be a lot, take it from someone who spends way too much time on Youtube – it’s definitely not.  There is evidently too much work put into these videos for just a few people to watch them, so… Continue reading

Comfort music for students with decisions to make

Spring is fast approaching, and while I’d love to jabber about flowers blossoming and the birds coming back, let’s face it – we live in Vancouver. At best, you might be able to enjoy the aforementioned sights for an hour every few weeks when it’s miraculously not raining torrentially. And you’ll be in class. I’m personally focusing my thoughts on an aspect of spring that is less depressing than the weather, application deadlines.

If you know me personally, you know that decisions like what major I want to go into or whether or not to move to campus keep me in a perpetual state of quarter-life crisis. I don’t think this is uncommon for university students – many of us are trying to figure out what we want to do for the rest of our life, and sometimes we believe the decisions we make now will have the colossal impact on what we spend the rest of our life doing. It’s helpful to have something other than ice cream or beer to help you cope emotionally. Music is great because it won’t make you fat.

Don’t have the right music? Continue reading

It’s alive

(EDIT: Apparently the main Blog Squad page doesn’t like fonts, so if you’re confused, you’re missing a strikethrough or something, sorry D: )

You might have justifiable trust issues with me right now (if you have any issues with me at all), but regardless, I want to go on record as saying I’m going to make this blog live. Continue reading

AIP, in my experience

I was lucky enough to be in a number of Postmedia newspapers today for an interview about my recent summer internship semester (here is the Vancouver Sun article, plug plug plug). I’ve had  a couple of friends that have asked me about it when they considered doing an Arts Internship, and because the deadline for most of the upcoming applications looks like it will be on September 30th I thought it might be something a couple people could be interested in reading about. I don’t have any pictures, but if you’re an Arts student looking for work experience please don’t fall asleep; this could be worth your time. Continue reading

What I wish somebody told me when I got here (Wayfinding Edition)

Hi! As much as I’d love to have some photos of good times on Imagine day to share, I seem to have failed at remembering to pack a camera. However, today’s festivities reminded me how confusing  the UBC campus was to me this time last year, so I’ve decided to share a few things that could’ve saved my terrified and directionally-challenged first-year butt hours of confusion had I been told them this time last year.

It doesn’t matter how dorky you think you look, you need a map.

Yes, people might notice that you look lost when you’re holding a map. You know who looks even more lost? A lost person. Choose which one you want to be. Continue reading

Hi, nice to meet you, here is a map to my house

Hi – I’m Clayton, a 19 year-old 2nd UBC Arts student. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be able to join Blog Squad this year, and if you can  sit tight for the next couple minutes I’ll explain to you who I am and what I’d like to talk about here. Continue reading
