More people consult Google over health – By Nigel Hawkes, Health Editor
“GOOGLE, the internet search engine, has now become one of the patient’s
best friends, second only to a family doctor.
A survey of 1,000 people found that 12 per cent turn first to
Google. Fewer consult family and friends, the media or medical
encyclopaedias when faced with a medical problem. ”

These two blogs that Dean mentioned, by KevinMD internist in Boston, but originally from Toronto) and California Medicine Man (assistant health sciences prof at UCLA) are making the rounds of library listservs, with the usual shocked-and-appalled reactions.
I think that we have lots to learn about how physicians find information – and these blogs can help us learn more. What blogs like these show is that we have a lot more work to do to help our users understand not only the limits of search engines, and that we haven’t been very good at providing them with easy, lightening fast, and MEANINGFUL ways to search in quality resources like PubMed.
I’d suggest that anyone who knows of an upcoming physician conference try to get on the program. Those writers among us need to make a beeline to medical editors. I posted a piece on physician blogs and medical information today in my SiteLines column at workingfaster.com/sitelines — and (after some deliberation) I also posted a comment on California Medicine Man’s weblog, which is linked from the SiteLines article .

Dean,
This is the type of discussion that needs to occur at medical conferences, too. Please come and speak to the BC Medical Association sometime.
