This blog will investigate the effects of foreign intervention with a case study focusing on Havana, Cuba and how global capital flows and international interests have affected the preservation of the city’s heritage infrastructure.

Cuba has remained relatively untouched by globalization and has not modernized at the same speed as other states within its geographical region, by commonly-held definitions. Often considered an infrastructural time capsule, the uncertainty of Cuba’s future –  post-sanctions – is commonly discussed in terms of its position in the global economy, however its local repercussions are as yet unclear. By focusing our study on heritage preservation, we hope to gain a better understanding of the effects of rapid economic transition on perceptions of cubanidad.
