 Jean-Paul Isson, vice president of  predictive analytics of the popular job recruiting website, Monster, was amazed to see the large amount of data the website was collecting. These data included résumé, emails and webpages that were visited and the information are all critical to helping Monster find the right compatibility between the recruiters and the user. However, the data could was not organized into something that the job searching engine could put to use. “Data integration was the real challenge,” says Mr. Isson. Monster, being a company that is relies heavily on technology, needed to consider better technology management.

Business Technology Management (BTM) is crucial for a company like Monster. The role of Information Technology (IT) is important to a “company [that] can apply IT in a precise way to something that’s already different and valuable about what it does, then IT can have a kind of amplification effect in making the advantage stronger.” In this case, given that Monster is a company that collects large amounts of data, it can apply IT to their business operations to make the company stronger and more efficient.

In addition, Mr. Isson ended up hiring SAS Institute Inc., North Carolina-based analytics company to help. He worked with the company to help figure out what to analyze and which data points would be best to look at. SAS Institute’s software was able to produce data which allowed Mr. Isson to efficiently analyze information and figure out which data points to focus on. This proves that IT and BTM both play a role in determining a company’s success.
