I am wondering if most institutions have teaching awards for TAs – who administers them, and how do they manage the logistics? At Western our grad student society awards these, but the undergrad association is also interested in a new award. In the case of faculty awards, they send someone to watch every nominee teach – and do a really thorough job observing, describing faculty teaching innovation. They are not sure how to manage the volume of nominations they may get for TAs. Any ideas and experiences? How does your institution choose the best TAs for awards? Based on comments? Observation?

We also have one that is a Provost award for Graduate Student Teaching (I was the winner in 2012). I’ll speak to you about our process of selection.

One year both of my head TAs from our TA Training course got a Killiam. This is wonderful as there is only one or two per faculty.
Interesting discussion on the various implementations of program evaluations across different programs and countries! For example, a university in Brazil kept track of alumni employment, and one in Germany had TA assessment for every lecture (as part of specific government mandated program).
