When I first started playing the game, I was very interested in the narratives. I felt that it was necessary to know the story to be able to complete the quests and objective of the game. However, over time I found myself quickly skipping over the narrative each time. Additionally, I found myself skipping over instructions as I felt I knew what to expect. Initially I got excited when the graphics changed, indicating that a story or video would come up. This change in graphics and the editing caught my attention. However, the story line itself was not as engaging as I expected. I believe this was mainly because I was eager to play the game and level up. I felt the story was interrupting my progress so I would skip over it. The first narrative I that properly engaged me intellectually was the initial part of the game where my character just woke up from her dream. However, this was mainly because I was new to the game and felt like I needed that information.
Unless the story contributes to decisions made in the game, I believe the idea of studying a game narrative frivolous. This is mainly because the time spent reading/watching the narrative could be used to do something more useful. Currently, most of the story is told through words, especially from NPCs I interact with in the game. I usually skip over interactions with the NPCs. However, when I realise they might have said something important I trace back my steps and try to gather as much information as possible. In one instance, my character was rescuing NPCs that were held hostage by the dark forces. The narratives were very generic, and I felt the need to quickly skip over them.
The violence and viciousness in many game narratives can be very problematic especially if they are very gory. Viewing such violence for most young gamers may prove to be an issue and may contribute to antisocial and aggressive behaviour. This in turn, may impact the sociocultural environment most gamers engage in. However, most games are made out of stories and inspirations of real life events, movies, books etc. So individuals are still exposed to similar violence and viciousness but, it is simply through a different medium. In terms of GW2 I might be interested in watching a movie with the story. However, I don’t feel as invested in the narratives of the game as I am with movies and books.
