In WHO’s decision to add gaming disorder to its International Classification of Diseases, it is highlighting individuals’ extreme addiction to gaming, which impairs their ability to function and take part in daily life activities. However, this has its benefits and drawbacks. It informs parents of the negative impacts excessive gaming may have in the development of their child. Moreover, the increased attention brings about quick, relevant prevention and treatment measures. However, according to the WHO only a small portion of the individuals who play video games are affected by the gaming disorder. Therefore, individuals may misinterpret enthusiasm towards gaming as a gaming disorder. Moreover, this declaration adds a negative connotation to gaming, ignoring the benefits individuals receive from gaming.
This classification of gaming further contributes to the negative connotation gaming already has in society. Parents will become more engaged in their childrens’ lives, preventing them from gaming. Despite the negative associations individuals have towards gaming, it is still a big industry in which various young individuals participate. There are certain benefits and skills individuals can develop through gaming e.g. improved coordination, problem solving skills, multitasking skills, attention, and concentration. Steven Dux, a youtuber turned $27,000 to $3,000,000 before the age of 24 and he benefits his success in the stock market to his involvement in video games. He suggests that his ability to understand players patterns in games can be applied to individuals’ patterns in the stock market. However, we cannot ignore the fact that, Steven may be an anomaly and he has a different work ethic in comparison to other gamers.
However, this classification also emphasizes the importance of human interaction, and the importance of functioning in society. Moreover, the violence in various video games may have a psychological impact on individuals and encourage aggressive behavior. Therefore, I believe the declaration of the disorder among one of the international classification of diseases, brings to light the negative impact gaming may have on an individual. However, I also believe like anything else that gaming has its benefits and drawbacks. Individuals that choose to game should ensure they are engaging in ethical behavior, recognize the differences between gaming and reality, and find a balance between time spent on gaming and other responsibilities.
