Week 3: Creating my character- Je Suis Grroot by linasia niazi

Before creating my character, I was determined to pick exciting options and create a character that would stand out. However, as I went through the multiple choices that were available to me, I noticed that there were generic traits I wanted my character to have. The choices that I considered important, were her physical form, clothes, power, and abilities. I did not give much importance to choices such as “when the pale tree awakened me” or “the importance of Ventari’s teachings”. Essentially, anything that altered her appearance and powers greatly affected my decisions. I did not really put much thought in decisions that involved her beliefs.

I was unable to alter the type of clothing/armour she was wearing. Although I hate to admit it, this was my determining factor when I was conflicted between 2 choices. This choice was important to me because I wanted my character to look tough and strong. But also, I assumed having a high level of armour will impact my character’s ability to defend herself when facing opponents.

My character does not reflect/represent my real or ideal physicality or personality at all. As soon as I chose my chracter’s race, Sylvari, I tried to pick traits and characteristics that I thought would fit the race’s description best. For example, I wanted to pick a profession in which that race would strive in, in the world I created in my head. Therefore, I picked Necromancer to be my character’s profession. As soon as I made this decision, I wanted my character to be strong and have muscles, but I also wanted her to look innocent so she could trick her opponents. This was the main reason I gave her bigger eyes, smaller face, and fuller lips, characteristics which I believe provide contribute to an innocent look. However, my efforts in this aspect were in vain as the character marks her face with a certain symbol that impacts her facial features.

I identify with the adventurous side of my character’s race. It was one of the main reasons I picked the Sylvari. The other races seemed too boring or generic to me. Another factor that I considered important was the name of my character. I wanted her name to be “I am Groot”. As this name was taken, I tried various versions of it until I found a variation that was allowed, “Je Suis Grroot”. This was mainly because at this stage of creating my character she looked slightly scary, so I wanted to pick a fun name.
