With a touch of a button (or smartphone app) one can send a message, take a photo, or purchase items online. Technology has evolved significantly within the past 5 years, and consumers are becoming more and more lazy.
Recently in class, Julio showed us a photo of a marketing campaign from a local grocery store. In the subway station, there was a large sticker deco of a grocery store shelf in the platform, and commuters were able to click on which item they wanted to purchase in that instant. The purchases would then be ready for pick up at your home by the time you arrived off of the subway. This was a fascinating new form of grocery shopping (and a tad lazy); however, Asia has always been more technologically advanced than the rest of the world.
I stumbled upon this article on Marketing Mag, and it seems that Canada is attempting to keep up with Asia. Loblaw and Metro, two of Canada’s largest grocers, are succumbing to the pressures of ecommerce. The rising trend of consumers shopping online has leaked into grocery shopping, thus the Loblaw has introduced a “click-and-collect” program where shoppers can purchase their items online and pick them up at the local store. Metro is rumoured to be planning their introduction into the ecommerce world within the following years.
This new form of shopping fascinates and astonishes me at the same time. Fascinating because it’s incredible how much technology can enhance our lives and the quickness of all companies to turn to digital. Astonishing because humans are becoming lazier and lazier that the future generations most likely won’t understand how to live their lives without technology. It’s a bittersweet time for the world, but the advancement in technology is incredible and I believe can help the world in the long run.
