In two weeks I’ll be embarking on a new adventure! I’ll be heading up to Haida Gwaii for the month of June for my Community Field Experience. I’m really looking forward to immersing myself in a new place and new culture. I’m hoping that from this experience I’ll gain a different perspective and outlook on teaching.
This will be my first time to Haida Gwaii and my first experience teaching in a rural community. I hope to learn what teaching and living in a rural community feels like, and to see if that lifestyle is suited for me. I think I’ll learn a lot from this experience, and I really hope that I can connect with the locals to learn more about the Haida culture and community.
During my practicum at École Inman Elementary, I taught in a grade 2 and 3 French Immersion classroom. I’m hoping to get a chance to experience teaching and working with a variety of age levels before I head into the unknown next year.
I don’t really know what to expect but I can’t wait to get up there! It will be a long journey – a seventeen hour drive up to Prince Rupert followed by a ten hour ferry – but I’m sure it will be well worth it. From what I’ve seen, Haida Gwaii looks like an absolutely beautiful place and I can’t think of a better place to be to wrap up my long practicum.
