Memo to Erika Paterson -Research Proposal<\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Unit1 Reflection Blog<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nThe first unit and set of assignments introduce me to the technical writing course. I have learned how to write an application letter, how to write a memo to my instructor, as well as how to define a technical term.<\/span><\/p>\nI had a very nice experience with this unit. Although I spent three years writing academic articles and research papers, I have never learned how to write professionally. After completing unit 1, I instantly feel like I made the right choice for picking this class. I look forward to the following assignments that will help my professional writing.<\/span><\/p>\nThe assignment that I enjoyed the most is the \u201cDefinition Assignment\u201d. I pick \u201cA\/B\u201d testing as my word for this assignment. In this assignment, I realized the importance of explaining technical terms to non-technical readers. As I was writing the definition for \u201cA\/B testing\u201d, I was not expecting so much history associated with this approach. In my previous marketing class, the term A\/B testing was simply explained as split testing. However, my group member Luke Jang (after reading my draft) comments that this term \u201csplit testing\u201d is also a technical term, and it is difficult for non-technical readers to understand. Jiang suggests that I should explain this term further. His comment makes me realize that my professor in marketing class is using a technical term to explain another technical term.<\/span><\/p>\nJang\u2019s review is extremely helpful, he points out I should improve my MLA citation format. In my other classes, I am used to using the APA citation format, he walks me through the citation process, and I am extremely thankful.<\/span><\/p>\nAs I was reviewing Jang\u2019s draft, I learned that sometimes it is more appropriate to use active voice than passive voice. I found several dangling modifiers in Jang\u2019s draft, which also reminds me not to use a passive voice in my edited definition assignment.<\/span><\/p>\nI also reviewed Di Fei Su\u2019s draft, and I learned that the \u201cparenthetical definition\u201d should be distinguished from \u201csentence definition\u201d. As stated on page 406 of our textbook, the parenthetical definition is intended to offer readers additional information for the sentence definition. Moreover, I also realized that the \u201cexpanded definition\u201d is meant to speculate what additional information that non-technical readers need, and then put the information in a \u201cquestion and answer\u201d format.<\/span><\/p>\nI have enjoyed completing the assignments in unit 1 and learned a great deal about defining technical terms. I want to thank my group members as well as Dr. Erika Paterson for their assistance and encouragement throughout this process.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Unit 2 Reflection Blog\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\nIn unit 2, I have learned a great deal about the requirements of a progress report, and how to professionally set up my LinkedIn profile.<\/span><\/p>\nThe progress report is something I have never written before. In other writing classes I attended, I only learned how to write drafts. It is the first time I present my progress report to my instructor, and I faced a lot of difficulties when completing the assignment. However, Dr. Erika Paterson assisted me and helped me to revise the assignment. Dr. Paterson taught me the differences between making recommendations for small business and ACTUALLY testing the proposed solutions, this saved me from writing my report in the wrong direction, so that I could put more time and energy into making recommendations instead of testing if my proposed solution is feasible.<\/span><\/p>\nCreating the Linkedln profile and reviewing my teammates\u2019 profile makes me realize the importance of gaining working experiences and volunteering experiences in University. For instance, one of my teammates\u2014Luke Jang; his profile is more than professional. He has many job experiences and volunteer experiences, while my Linkedln profile looks very pale.<\/span><\/p>\nReceiving Jang\u2019s review on my profile for the first time is wonderful, he helped me to better understand how to set up a profile in a professional way. His suggestions including adding the Education experience at the bottom of my profile; creating a self-introduction page; and selecting pictures that have good visual quality, etc. All of these suggestions are thoughtful and useful.<\/span><\/p>\nUnit 3 Reflection Blog\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Unit three has several assignments and they all taught me how to write more professionally.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The assignment that I enjoyed the most in Unit 3 is the \u201c Writing with You Attitude\u201d; it taught me how to not offend my audiences and make them believe that they are the most important person in the correspondence. I learned how to avoid the pronoun \u201c you\u201d in the body of correspondence, but use \u201cyou\u201d in the introduction and the conclusion in order to make a positive impression on the reader. I also learned how to avoid imperatives within the body of my correspondence, because people are usually defensive, and using imperatives in the body of my correspondence will make them feel like I wrote to command them, instead of giving my advice. Reviewing Zhe Su\u2019s \u201cWriting with attitude\u201d was a pleasure. I really enjoyed reading her assignment, because her memo offered much informative advice for Evan Crisp and the content was nicely organized. I believe her memo would be much \u201creader-centered \u201d if she could avoid the pronoun \u201cyou\u201d within the body of her memo.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The two letters of \u201c Complaint\u201d and \u201c Bad News\u201d allow me to learn how business document persuade the audience to respond or act in a certain way. The tone in business letters is very important, it reflects our professionalism.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Employing the appropriate tone can help us to receive the kind of response we want. Moreover, I find the textbook very useful when writing these two letters, on page 353 and 354, there are two-letter samples which clearly showed me the correct structure of the \u201cBad News\u201d letter and the \u201cComplaint\u201d letter. I followed the guidelines in the textbook, as well as the Lesson 3:1 instructions, and they helped me to formalize my letters and complete them in a professional way.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Writing the formal report draft was a difficult process. The act of gathering data about COVID-19 in Beijing and the results from the online survey, and analyzing the feasibility of my proposed solution was a refreshing experience for me. It was a great challenge for me to identify a problem and then use research and data to come up with a possible solution. I was glad that I did the progress report and the outline of the final report early in the process because they are useful guidelines that helped me to organize my draft. Reviewing Difei Su\u2019s final draft report helped me to learn about the structure of the final report more fully. I find this peer review assignment extremely beneficial because I was not just reviewing other\u2019s work, I was also reflecting my own work. When I pointed out Difei Su\u2019s draft\u2019s strengths and weaknesses (in a polite way)\u00a0 according to the Instructor\u2019s blog\u2019s guidelines, I was also thinking about how I can improve my final report. This peer review assignment allows me to assess my own work more objectively, I also appreciate the comments that Difei Su made about my draft. While synthesizing and completing my final draft, I will be using these informative suggestions to improve my work.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I look forward to completing the next Unit\u2019s assignments, especially the final report!<\/span><\/p>\nWeb Folio Reflection <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nCreating Web Folio is an uneasy process, as it requires me to revise past assignments. However, this process helped my self-editing skills. When I go back to my previous works, I can instantly tell what are the problems with my previous work. For example, as I opened the first peer review that I made for Luke Jang\u2019s definition assignment. I saw myself not meeting the \u201cYou Attitude\u201d assignment\u2019s requirements. Some of my suggestions are commanding and irrespecutful under the light of \u201c You Attitude\u201d instructions. The formatting of my past peer reviews are incorrect as well, so I revised the peer review for Luke Jang, and\u00a0<\/span>I can really see the progress that I made throughout the course by comparing my past peer reviews and my recent ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe creation of Web Folio also helped me with my organizing skills. I have to think about how to group my assignments together, and what sections they belong to.<\/p>\n
Some of my Web Folio strengths include 1. a nice layout 2. a detailed summary of Engl 301 work. However, I am not satisfied with the page visuals. I am unfamiliar with web editing and need further training. <\/span><\/p>\nDuring the Web Folio creation process, I encountered some technical problems such as: how do I make the Home Page static? For example, as I was creating new posts for my Web Folio, these posts always show up on my Home Page. I looked at the tutorial video again and again, and finally, find out how to customize my page.<\/span><\/p>\nSelf-Assessment Reflection\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\nEnglish 301 is a very challenging course for me, and each unit is equally challenging. After spending 12 weeks of training, I see myself change from knowing nothing about professional writing to self-editing my past works. <\/span><\/p>\nI enjoyed writing peer reviews for my teammates very much and see what suggestions my teammates offered me. I appreciate their continuous encouragement and assistance throughout the course, they put their time and energy in helping me to become a better writer. I also learned a great deal about my own works when I writing peer reviews for my team members. I usually combine their suggestions with what I learned from reviewing their works while revising. This is extremely helpful when making improvements to my assignments, it makes me understand the value of peer-reviewing. <\/span><\/p>\nOne of my favorite assignments in this course is the \u201cYOU Attitude\u201d assignment. In my other classes, I always receive instructors\u2019 comments like \u201c avoiding passive tone\u201d. However, I never truly understand how. The handout in \u201cYOU Attitude\u201d assignment instructions, as well as the instructor\u2019s blog helped me to understand what kind of sentences have a passive tone. <\/span><\/p>\nOne of the most challenging assignments in this course is the Final Report. Although I have written business proposals and business plans for other courses before, what I learned in this final report is formatting. Moreover, it is rare for students to have the opportunity to come up with their topic, a topic of their interests. I am grateful that I can get this chance and write about something I truly care about. Furthermore, this Final Report also trained my interview and survey skills. From the instructor\u2019s blog, I learned about the interview\/survey ethics, which is another thing that I am unfamiliar with. <\/span><\/p>\nWhat I wish I could improve more is grammar in my works. Although I tried to be grammarly correct as much as possible, I am still unable to write papers like native students. Luckily, my teammates always check my grammar and try to explain which of my sentences are Grammarly incorrect then assist me when rewriting. <\/span><\/p>\nI never imaged that I will learn so much from this course. In my previous writing classes, I learned to write academically, but not professionally.\u00a0 <\/span>Now it looks like a wise choice to pick this class when I am in year three.
