This page is purposed to show my best writing works, especially in ENGL 301 course I took at UBC. You may feel this page useful if you are interested in checking my communication and writing skills. In this course, I practiced multiple types of writing, including formal letters, peer reviews, and a formal report. Each work provides a brief explanation, so you can find the works relevant to what you are interested in.
Definition Assignment
This assignment was purposed to explain a professional term to the readers who are not professionals in the field. The assignment is explaining the term ‘recursion.’ You will see how I am familiar with the professional terms and my communication skills. I found this assignment very useful since there might be many chances to work collaboratively with other departments in a work environment.

Peer Review of the Definition Assignment
I was in a writing team for the course ENGL 301, ‘Team Connect4,’ and working with them was really helpful in various aspects. One of the most helpful works were peer reviews. I teamed up with Eric and reviewed some of his works. This peer review was on the first draft of the definition assignment I introduced above. The review shows my ability in working collaboratively with teammates, as well as my analysis skills in writing.

Formal Report Proposal and Progress Report with Surveys
The formal report for ENGL 301 course was written in multiple phases. The formal report went through the research proposal and the progress report stage, containing the overall research plan and process not only on the writing analysis but also the methods of collecting primary data. This process made my formal report stronger, and the process itself was also good practice by writing these in professional forms. While working in the process, I tried to apply the knowledge I learned from my formal work experience and the statistic courses I took at UBC to make the research useful in real-life problems.

Proposal Memo
Most of the writings done in the ENGL 301 course were submitted in email memo form. This memo, the proposal memo for the formal report contains a brief summary of the proposal for the formal report I introduced above and the link to the proposal. There will be a lot of opportunities to write email memos when I go into the professional world, so I believe these practices for writing email memos will be a great help in the future.

LinkedIn Best practices memo
LinkedIn is one of the most important platforms for careers. As a university student who is looking for a co-op position, I already had a LinkedIn account and profile, but searching for the best ways of using LinkedIn was a helpful experience even though I already know some of the tips. Furthermore, as the memo was shared with team members, it was interesting to read others’ memos and check the tips I could not find. In this memo, you will find out my understanding of career networks.
Memo to Evan Crisp
One of the writing skills I learned from the ENGL 301 course was YOU-Attitude. The attitude focuses on the reader and tries to make the writing easier to understand from the perspective of readers. Most of my works are written in YOU-Attitude – at least I tried to do so. However, reviewing other person’s work and trying to fit the writing in YOU-Attitude was totally different from writing my works in YOU-Attitude. I could look back on my works, whether they were written in YOU-Attitude. In addition, this assignment made me think of the polite way of advising when there are so many points to revise. The point of this assignment was advising to use YOU-Attitude while applying the attitude at the same time, and the point made me focus more on YOU-Attitude.
Complaint letter and Response letter
The assignment was instructed to write both a complaint letter and a response to the complaint from the perspective of the personnel in charge of the complaint. The assignment was a good opportunity to learn the format of a business letter, as well as the manner of refusing customers’ complaints without offending them. This activity was focused on improving communications skills with people who are not familiar with, or even with people who are upset.

Peer Review of a Formal Report
Similar to the peer review of definition writing, the peer review of a formal report was to review a teammate’s work and give feedback in an email memo. In this assignment, I could concentrate on the readers’ perspectives because I did not participate in the actual process of collecting the data or analyzing it. Unlike other assignments, team members did not work on the same topics and the methods of collecting data could be different. In other words, it was similar to the real experience of reviewing other teammates’ works that are different from my projects. It required more concentration and analysis skills since I could only partly reflect my own writing experience in this review.

Formal Report
The final formal report, “Improving UBC Students’ Experience in Hybrid Courses” took the professional format used in the actual graduate thesis, containing the contents, body with formal structure, and reference lists, as well as a letter of transmittal and abstract. It gave me a good opportunity to write in formal structure and tone. The formal report might definitely be helpful if I planned for a higher degree. Still, it was very helpful since I could write about my organization and analysis of the research data. You can find my ability to display the results in a clear tone using professional terms and analysis.

I hope you enjoyed reading the writings I have done in the ENGL 301 course. You can find my other works in this web folio or on my team page. Unlike the best works introduced on this page, some of the works you might find on this web folio or the team page are the first draft or the former versions that I did not revise recently. By reading the works, you will feel how much I improved my writing skills in a short time. Thank you for showing interest in my works.
