UBC’s ENGL 301 is designed to provide students with the tools to write in a business, professional and technical context. The intended audience for this course is catered towards a variety of students from different backgrounds. The course is divided in 4 units (Unit 1: Principles, Practices and People, Unit 2: Designing a Report Proposal; Defining Terms with Audience in Mind, Unit 3: Designing a Report Outline & Draft; Building your Resume and Job Application Skills, Unit 4: Drafting the Formal Report; Peer Review and Final Report; Developing network strategies). Each containing 3 lessons. These lessons encourage and allow students to practice and use professional, as well as technical writing to further improve their communication skills. Through this,  students are able to perfect techniques of technical writing through various assignments, and provides an environment to interact with other classmates’ work through discussions, peer reviews and analyses. ENGL 301 also grants the opportunity for students to create and build a professional portfolio and encourages personal growth through the use of technical writing.
As professional writing is required in most industries, I believe that this course will be especially useful following the completion of my degree. By mastering professional writing, there are benefits such as; increases of career opportunities, developing thought processes, being able to communicate need-to-know information efficiently, and increases productivity. These and other advantages correlated with professional and technical writing depict some of the reasons why I chose to enrol in this course. Additionally, as this is an online course, I appreciate the flexibility this grants me, as I am able to schedule and manage my time along with my other commitments. My expectations for this course is to be able to establish a professional online presence. Through this course, I hope to be able to learn various skills and tools to help communicate my thoughts better and be able to write in a clear, and efficient manner within a professional context.
