BC Housing (Research Intern)
Oct. 2022 – Sept. 2023
- Developing a tool for designing BC Energy Step Code (BCESC) compliant buildings under climate change and other future uncertainties
- Review the available building energy performance evaluation tools and methods that can be used to design BCESC-compliant buildings.
- Identify the economic and environmental impacts of climate change, energy supply variations, operational conditions, and macroeconomic factors on BCESC-compliant buildings.
- Develop a model to identify the robust energy upgrade strategies to achieve the desired steps of the BCESC accounting for climate change and other future variabilities.
- Convert the developed model to a software tool or a plugin to an existing performance evaluation tool for assisting decision-making.

Nov. 2022 – Apr. 2023
- Life cycle costing analysis of a deep building energy retrofit of a mid-rise building to understand the impact of energy conservation measures on emissions savings
- Reviewed research papers and identified retrofit projects in BC or other jurisdictions to make a list of energy retrofit measures.
- Utilized the whole-building energy modelling software (EnergyPlus) to evaluate the annual performance of the selected building on an hourly basis and test the impact of each energy retrofit measure on the base model individually.
- Conduct life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of the identified retrofit measures to demonstrate the capital investment and other financial factors affecting an owner’s decisions.
- Conduct life cycle assessment to evaluate embodied carbon impact of energy retrofit measures.
