Standards

When I reflect and engage with the standards set out by the British Columbia Ministry of Education there are two central themes that resonate with me, acting in the best interest of the all students and engaging in life long learning. Keeping students best interest in the forefront of our educational practice is imperative to ensure that our students are given the opportunities to succeed. Personally, this has informed my teaching practice from the perspective that all lesson plans are subject to change. Realizing that lesson plans were not ‘set in stone’ is the key element of acting in the best interest of all the students. Adapting lesson plans to fit the needs of all students, I find, is one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching. Being open to change and a proponent of life long learning is important modeling for students to interact with throughout their educational experience. Creating a dialog with your students around life long learning dispels the top down structure of traditional education and develops a collaborative setting where students are able to learn through exploration and interaction with peers. Using the standards as a guide throughout my life as an educator, I will continually reflecting on my teaching practice to develop and grow as an individual and educator.
