{"id":3,"date":"2015-08-19T10:08:26","date_gmt":"2015-08-19T17:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hcat\/?p=3"},"modified":"2016-02-03T18:40:31","modified_gmt":"2016-02-04T01:40:31","slug":"3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hcat\/2015\/08\/19\/3\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hcat\/files\/2015\/08\/UBC-FAIRFIELD-LOGO-smaller.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-27 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hcat\/files\/2015\/08\/UBC-FAIRFIELD-LOGO-smaller.jpg\" alt=\"UBC FAIRFIELD LOGO smaller\" width=\"718\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hcat\/files\/2015\/08\/UBC-FAIRFIELD-LOGO-smaller.jpg 718w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hcat\/files\/2015\/08\/UBC-FAIRFIELD-LOGO-smaller-300x50.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 718px) 100vw, 718px\" \/><\/a>Thank you for your interest in the Health Communication Assessment Tool (HCAT).<\/p>\n<p>HCAT is intended for use in clinical simulations to evaluate the communication skills of student and professional healthcare providers: RN, MD, DO, APRN, PA, etc. by faculty, peers, and participants.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hcat\/files\/2015\/08\/HCAT-development-timeline.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">development <\/a>of HCAT began in 2006 by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nursing.ubc.ca\/Faculty\/biopage.aspx?c=82.7284715197857\">Dr. Suzanne Hetzel Campbell<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairfield.edu\/lassochannel\/academic\/profile\/index.lasso?id=163\">Dr. Eileen O&#8217;Shea<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairfield.edu\/lassochannel\/academic\/profile\/index.lasso?id=167\">Dr. Michael Pagano<\/a> at Fairfield University. It was first used on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1876139911001009\" target=\"_blank\">small sample of nursing students.<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S187613991300087X\" target=\"_blank\">Resulting psychometric analysis<\/a> showed that the tool demonstrates internal consistency and is useful in evaluating communication behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>HCAT has also been <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ecns.2015.06.001\" target=\"_blank\">tested interprofessionally and internationally<\/a> by over 200 expert and novice educators from 11 countries, revealing excellent interrater reliability for the average measures. Exploratory factor analysis showed a five-factor model with the following themes: empathic behaviors, introduction behaviors, trust building behaviors, patient\/family education behaviors, and power-sharing behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>Through continued revision, <a href=\"https:\/\/survey.ubc.ca\/s\/HCAT\/\">HCAT is now a 22-item Likert-scale instrument<\/a> and is ready for field (wide-scale) testing. We are currently collaborating with nurse educators locally (British Columbia) and internationally (Brazil) to further evaluate HCAT with their nursing students.
