LMS Reflection
I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed my Moodle experience. Our school district is implementing its use this September so it was nice to have something be so relevant to my context. That’s one of the things that has struck about this course so far is how relevant it is to what I’m doing.
In setting up my Moodle course I immediately printed off the Moodle guide that was provided in the course and found it to be an invaluable resource. It solved a number of problems I encountered in the course of setting up my Moodle site. I actually found most of what I did in Moodle to be fairly intuitive and what I couldn’t figure out on my own I was able to find in the Moodle guide or the internet.
I set up a Moodle course centred around Social Studies 11 which I will be teaching in September. I’m really quite excited at the prospect of using this in some capacity. It won’t be as a standalone online course because I don’t teach that but I certainly can see it being used as a companion to my course. For example, I would put my video of the Demographic Transition Model online there so that students who maybe didn’t quite get the full grasp of how it works could review it at home.
Another use I see for this in my classes is to set up a bank of online questions from the Social Studies 11 government exam. This way, the students could have feedback generated as soon as they answer the question. I really liked how I could give reasons why a multiple choice question was wrong in our practice quiz we set up. I think this is a very good way for students to gain a better understanding of the material because the course is very content heavy. This will take a considerable amount of time on my part initially as there are a number of different government exams I can draw from and I’d like to give the students as much opportunity as possible to experience success but in the end, I’ll have a great resource that I can use more than once.
In the end, I think my Moodle experience has taught me a fair bit. I will definitely be taking what I’ve learned and applying it to by day to day teaching. I think the students will enjoy experiencing it as well and hopefully it can augment their learning.
