Healthy Young Minds started in 2010 as an independent initiative run by second year UBC medical students with a passion for promoting mental health and reducing stigma in the community. The 2011-2012 Healthy Young Minds team, made up of Sally Ke, Joshua Lai, Terri Sun, Jay Wang, and Michael Yang has taken their work one step further by evaluating the impact of their efforts. Sally Ke graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology from UBC and has a special interest in working with Vancouver Downtown Eastside residents who have mental illnesses or drug addictions. Joshua Lai completed an undergraduate degree at Brown University in Neuroscience and has a passion for mental health advocacy in the community. Terri Sun has an undergraduate degree in Pharmacology from UBC and has worked closely with pregnant women struggling with addictions at BC Women’s Hospital.  Jay Wang graduated with a Bachelor of Health Sciences from McMaster University and became interested in mental health through working with patients battling drug addictions at BC Women’s. Michael Yang graduated from the University of Toronto with an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and a Masters degree in Biotechnology. He has previously worked closely with many patients suffering from mental illness at the Toronto Grace Hospital. As second year medical students at UBC, they hope to continue to advocate for mental health in their future careers as physicians.
