Abstract

The 2021 BC heatwave was the deadliest climate-related event in Canadian history, with hundreds of heat-attributed deaths. Climate change increases the risk of more sustained heat waves in the future. Our project maps the vulnerability of Metro Vancouver to heat-related illnesses and death, as well the locations of cooling centres that were open to the public during the 2021 BC heatwave. We identify which areas in Metro Vancouver are most at risk of heat-related illnesses and death, and highlight areas where additional cooling centres are most needed.
