Welcome
Welcome to my blog for English 301 at the University of British Columbia. English 301 is a distance education course that incorporates the principles of written and online communications in a professional and business context. The course is divided into four units, each comprising of 3 weeks per unit. In unit 1, the principles of technical and business writing will be explored. In unit 2, students will work collaboratively in writing teams to submit a proposal. Peer reviews and memo writing will also be explored. In unit 3, the formal report will be revised and re-drafted. In unit 4, peer reviews along with the report are reviewed by the instructor for evaluation.
There will be three major projects which include a formal report, a job application package, and a web folio. This course also encompasses the preparation of abstracts, proposals, applications, reports, correspondence, and online communication. These compositions and exercises will help to teach key elements, techniques, and strategies that are fundamental in a professional setting.
After completing this course, I hope to improve my professional writing skills by applying the knowledge and experience I’ve gained from the course material. Throughout my academic and professional career, I found that communication is the foundation of these interpersonal relationships. It is necessary to be concise and clear when reporting to my employer or professors, as well as during discussions with my peers. I believe that this course will offer me a technical approach in how I communicate, which will in turn, strengthen and ameliorate my writing skills.
