‘splain. Your Facebook status?

This is actually the first time I have ever done this but I want to get this down before my memory is distorted by time.

So last Thursday, I was so happy that I couldn’t resist a Facebook status update. Now, normally I avoid that unless I really have something to say. Like you would never catch me saying something like “About to eat dinner! Yum, sushi”. First of all, I don’t say “Yum”. But that’s another story. Second, I wouldn’t want to waste a split second of your time hoping people would read and comment on it. All this is just personal preference.
So here is my status from that Thursday.

Alison Chan would like to thank Lucy Yuan, Haida 2, Shannon/Kim/Amber/JESS!, and FAACT for an amazing night of unexpected victories =)

That was one seemingly physically-exerting Thursday. Hence my main setting/UBC-related thing/service is UBC Rec.
The morning started off with me going to the volleyball drop-ins (free, also on Mondays from 8AM-5PM) at the Rec centre. A few hours and classes later, I meet up with Brian, the other FAACT Learning Team Leader who organizes FAACT-UBC Rec stuff with me. To quickly give you background, our last event (Gutterball) wasn’t that successful because we didn’t collect a whole bunch of information from the people who signed up but we learned from our mistakes and still had fun with the FAACTees and LTLs (including Carman!) who were there. Speaking of, I met some of you Blogsquaders there! Below average height for a supermodel, good height for me since I’m not and have no intention of being a supermodel, can’t miss me.

Back to the story. I was apprehensive and worried that we might face the same problem with accountability again but Brian assured me that he confirmed with everyone and he was right! Boo yah.
So we got changed and warmed up. I don’t know if it was on purpose or not, but that water was kind of cold but the UBC Rec on dry land leading the exercise got us to do some fun things like lunges and I can’t remember what else but I remember Katy Perry’s ‘Hot and Cold’ song playing. Was it water temperature change intentional or not, because after we checked our schedule, the water suddenly got a lot warmer. Huh.
Our first station was Escape The Titanic Inflatable! basically, it’s a big castleish inflatable. What made it hard was that it was floating on water and sometimes the water can make the inflatable you are leaping (in some people *coughcoughNicco*) or clenching (yea. Me.) across slippery or unstable. The hardest part was at the beginning, where there were these circular shapes like a can of pop. It looked like it got easier because not a lot of people fell off after that initial bump. FAACT had lots of enthusiasm and our team had 2 people finish climbing across the castle more than the other team so we won!! Cool!
Our next event was Polar Bear Ice Basketball. We had a little practice time and we were planning on substituting players but we ran out of time. Me, Nicco, Erin (FAACTee), Anna (FAACTee) and Sonique (FAACTee) started. At times, the other team was running circles around us with their fast passing but we’ve got pretty long arms here in FAACT so we were able to block some passes which led to Sonique scoring for us and time was up a minuteish later. We won that 1-0. TEAMWORK YEA!
We went to do the Scavenger Hunt afterwards. Basically, we put on blacked out goggles and our team had to direct us to get items with either tags or no tags on them and bring them back. So it was pretty loud because we were yelling (not in the water) but there were moments when we regrouped and one person talked to the person in the water so there weren’t that much talking from the rest of the team that sometimes could be heard as gibberish. We got the hunt done pretty quickly and won, I guess.
We went back to the Escape the Titanic Inflatable and we were like “We’ve done this before, it should be a breeze”. Did I mention earlier that that inflatable is tricky? Yea. It is. But some people in our team who couldn’t finish the 1st time finished the second time! Everyone was really impressed with Erin, Selena and Brian’s quickness and Kimberly’s constant encouragement. With our awesome cheering and teammates, we won this even too!
There was quite a bit of waiting and it seemed like the event was disorganized at some points. I don’t know why we didn’t go to the hot tub but we basically stood around, cold for 15 minutes waiting for our next event and to get event instructions.
Our last event was Shipwreck/Kayak Water Polo. Even though there were excess boats, only 6 players (minimum 3 guys. We had 3 guys and 5 girls) so two of us wound up sitting out. Basically, we were in inflatable kayaks and had one oar, wore helmets and one person rowed while the other paddled with her/his arms. Man, we got creamed! By the other team but it was a lot of fun and lots of “remember whens” came from this event.
We checked our standings when were done and to our surprise, we won the division! Quel surprise! But we decided to forfeit because we’re what FAACT stands for (Faculty of Arts Commuters) and semis/finals started at midnight. I was talking to someone a few days after the event who went onto semis and she said that they had enough time to go to Richmond, get lost and come back on time.
Facebook the image. It’s awesome.

After the event, everyone except me went to eat because I had a volleyball game. I heard it was great though and this is one of the times when I wish I could be in different places at the same time (just not as a ghost).

So my volleyball game was also with UBC Rec. It’s called the “Cross Volleyball League”. Actually relatively dry (from walking for 15 minutes outside), I walked into the gym and my team had a problem where we only had 4 players (you need at least 5 to play) or else we had to forfeit. Me, I hate having to do that (which in my mind means giving up) so after an hour of nervewrecking phone calls combined with casual, fun 2 on 2 playing within my team, we got another person thanks to my friend in Haida 2. I guess it was because we were having fun which resulted in confidence and happiness when Jess arrived, we were ecstatic! We won against a team who basically spent the last game they played against us just serving. Before we knew Jess was arriving, we told the people at the desk that we had to forfeit so the guy sent one of his referees home. However, the other ref stuck around after reffing one game and when Jess arrived and we unforfeited, he reffed for us! We won the first set and lost the second one by two points and won the third one by more than 5 points. It was such a great evening! =)

Oh, and if you’re wondering if my posts are always going to be this long, no. It’s not. I just feel guilty for writing blogs in my head but not writing them down instead for the past few days.

I'm a second year student in the biggest faculty on campus (Arts!) I'm a fairly bubbly person who awkwardly poses for "proper" photos while having a blast/no problem with photos goofing off. You get a hemph look if I don't see you recycling.

*gaspevous*

They let you unforfeit? I’m jealous 🙁 Last year at futsal, we had to forfeit a game because we didn’t have any girls show up within ten minutes of the game starting. 2 minutes after we “forfeited”, our girls showed up and yet we still had to pay the $25 forfeit fine
