UBC Leader Appreciation Day

Before I start my blog entry, I just want to say WOW! And props to the people who engineered this new look with more cool interfaces to the UBC Blogosphere! I’m liking it!

Last week, I talked about going to the UBC Leader Appreciation Day, which was for MUG Leaders, Squad Leaders, Squad Managers and anyone involved with IMAGINE/GALA/the upcoming UBC Orientations. So what happened then?

I was actually a little late to the event because I had to do a few things. This summer, I was actually pretty sick for a few days, which resulted in me missing a few important things in life. So I went to the doctor for a checkup. I cannot tell you the importance of the medical insurance that we have-thank you SunLife for the 80% reimbursement on the prescription drugs. Second, I went to the farmer’s market, which has become part of my weekend routine. To my disappointment, my most favourite meat farm was not present that day, but I left with a week’s worth of delicious snacks!

That day was raining a bit, and I was pleased to see more leaders attend than I expected. I like this year’s event more because it’s more organized. There was a team of volunteers running the activities. First, there was the classic game of “Move Your Butt”. Second, we played Bocce ball. I was in a group with UBC diversity at its best-representatives from almost every faculty (I didn’t have any Commerce people in my 6-7 people group). Bocce ball can actually get very…not exciting, but intense. It’s a simple game that almost all ages can play. Similar to curling, you are split into two teams and each team has to try to get the ball closest to the tiny ball. You can’t sweep or anything, but you toss the ball and can use the other team’s ball as an offensive mechanism for you by knocking their ball away or using it as a propeller. At the same time, you can also knock one of your own bocce balls away. It got so intense that a couple of times, we had to use tape measures to calculate who won.
Now, whoever came up with this idea is awesome. Our next activity was Capture the Flag…with waterballoons. Remember that although the rain stopped, the grass was still a bit wet and therefore slippery. We had a bit stalemate because the space (between the Belkin Art Gallery and the Buchanan buildings) was quite small and we had like 14 people on each team. A few of us slipped on the grass when we dared to go across to the other team’s space. My team won by a landslide but the important part was having fun. After the game, we had a waterfight…kind of. It was you had to catch the waterballoon that the other team was throwing but most of the balloons burst and people’s hands and legs got a little wet.
The food was good-they hired someone from M&M Meats to serve burgers but it was only until 1:30PM. They were good but the man wasn’t there long enough to satisfy our metabolized early twenties bodies. Of course, there were the usual chips.
Haha. We sort of crashed a wedding because there was one going on at the Rose Garden, and after the waterballoon fight, we watched the bride be escorted to the altar by her father and the bride and groom say their I Dos and first kiss as married people. It was sweet, but they may have thought that we were a bit creepy because you had like 50-60? people in their twenties watching this special and private moment.
This was a great day, as I got to meet more people, buy local, and hang with my friends! I’ve been pretty busy this summer and my friends’ and my schedules haven’t been matching very well so I haven’t seen many of my friends. This was great since I got to unwind and remind myself what/how it’s like to be me and who I am as a complete person.

In other news, I was routing for Robert to win in So You Think You Can Dance, and I didn’t expect Kent not to win. Is it just me or did I see them and Lauren dancing dead tired on Wednesday before the finale?

I'm a second year student in the biggest faculty on campus (Arts!) I'm a fairly bubbly person who awkwardly poses for "proper" photos while having a blast/no problem with photos goofing off. You get a hemph look if I don't see you recycling.
