It was a couple weeks ago that Dr. Dharamsi had come and spoken to us about Global Health and its development in our modern world. For some reason, I find myself reflecting back to that presentation on almost a daily basis ever since. It is important to note that I am extremely interested in studying health and its various constituents, as well as hoping to continue on my studies later in order to become a physician. Discussing global health from the perspective of a doctor was definitely something I appreciated. What really stuck for me was the way in which he approached trying to solve the various health issues in a village in Africa and basing it on his personal experience. He had discussed how he thought he should have started to try and solve various health-related issues back in Vancouver before trying to go out and solve external ones. He was also the one that had initially informed me how critical it was to incorporate the local people of an area when trying to develop a project that would, in some way, help others. He had alluded to a previous scenario where dentists had visited a village in Africa that was in need, according to Western standards, of dental care. Upon reaching the village, the dentists had learned that the local people had already had their own way of handling dental care that did not involve toothbrushes and toothpaste. Furthermore, his discussion of the realm of different opportunities that doctors and people in the health field can pursue in order to aid people in need was extremely eye-opening.
