Not too long ago, CBC released an article discussing how food insecurity has actually been rising over the past few years in Canada. The World Food Summit described food security as “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life”. The study, conducted by Valerie Tarasuk of the University of Toronto, concluded that there were at least four millions Canadians without access to safe and nutritious foods, with over a quarter of them being children. The results are, in fact, shocking, largely due to the fact that people assume such problems only exist in third world countries. This is a critical issue we are faced with, one that needs to be brought to our forefront. The answer to this massive issue? I don’t know. Theoretically speaking, ideas like lowering income taxes on the lower class and providing children free lunches at schools sound great, but I don’t know how feasible it will be to implement such large changes. However, one thing I can do is get informed about the issue. The first step to tackling food insecurity is to get know what it is and why it is a problem. Bringing it up to the forefront of my own discussions when exploring ideas such as development will also help. Only when more people begin to realize that this is an issue that exists in our “own backyard” can there be a real resolution.
