My name is Heather and I am a student in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia. My program of study is Global Resource Systems and I am specializing in Sustainable Agriculture. This means I learn about things like soil, the things that grow in soil, and the things that eat those things that grow in soil. This includes humans sometimes, but also aphids and wire worms. I would like to have a farm of my own (or perhaps with some friends) in the future, but not too far in the future. Before GRS I studied art at Emily Carr University of Art. This taught me how to think critically and solve problems, I also drew a bunch and made some sculptures. I saw Margret Atwood speak a couple weeks ago, she said that there are 3 things that all humans do before the age of 4, and can therefore be considered “human nature”. They are story telling, music making, and image making. This makes me feel better about spending large amounts of class time drawing in the margins of my notes. It also makes me want to learn an instrument, because that is something I’ve never done.
