{"id":31,"date":"2011-05-13T13:42:50","date_gmt":"2011-05-13T21:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/"},"modified":"2011-05-20T13:09:30","modified_gmt":"2011-05-20T19:09:30","slug":"flight-path","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/flight-path\/","title":{"rendered":"Flight Path"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am an instructor in a college vocational program.\u00a0 Each year I teach several face to face courses, a lot of online courses (using Moodle), and one blended course.\u00a0 I also supervise practicums (for education assistants, early childhood educators, and human service workers).<\/p>\n<p>My flight path contains many goals, and the two prominent ones are assessment and multimedia:<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/files\/2011\/05\/blog-collaboration.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-70\" title=\"Flight Path\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/files\/2011\/05\/blog-collaboration-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/files\/2011\/05\/blog-collaboration-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/hwik\/files\/2011\/05\/blog-collaboration.jpg 388w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> Assessment:<\/strong><\/span> Right now my online students are assessed fairly traditionally.\u00a0 They complete assignment and discussion forums, which I mark either formatively or summatively.\u00a0 NETS for Teachers (2008) discuss the importance of creating and using authentic learning activities and assessments that incorporate current tools.\u00a0 One of my goals is to evaluate my current assessment procedures, and then upgrade them to a new and improved level.\u00a0 I would also love to find ways to create secure online assessments for independent evaluations. I want to look at meaningful ways for students to complete self-assessment and peer assessment, and for ways for me to include these in the \u201cfinal grades\u201d which I am required to generate.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> Multimedia:<\/strong><\/span> I am not experienced in the use of multimedia, and so in fear and trepidation, I set this out to be one of my goals.\u00a0 Chickering and Ehrmann (1996) discuss ways to enrich apprentice-like activities.\u00a0 I would love to provide my practicum students with simulations, and have found nothing except clips on Youtube.\u00a0 Perhaps I will need to create them myself. \u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t how well I could do this, but I\u2019ll venture forth into learning more about the process.\u00a0 I had not heard the term \u201cdigital story\u201d until two weeks ago, and am taking a guess that perhaps it will fit into this category as well.\u00a0 So much to learn!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> Learning Management Systems:<\/strong><\/span> I have taught using Moodle for several years now, and have done some basic course design work using the information I have gleaned through usage.\u00a0\u00a0 I would like to expand my knowledge and gain a much higher level of competency.\u00a0 Chickering and Ehrmann (1996) state that, \u201cgood practice encourages contacts between students and faculty\u201d.\u00a0 One of my goals is to find ways to utilize both asynchronous and synchronous communications with online courses.\u00a0 Right now my students use forum discussions and emails to communicate with each other and with me, but I \u2018d like to find other ways to draw us together.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> Social Software:<\/strong><\/span> While not a big priority for me right now, I hope to learn about different ways post secondary institutions are using social software for learning purposes.\u00a0 What can these provide that can\u2019t be set up in Moodle?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"> Needed Resources: <\/span> In addition to a lot of research material, I will potentially need access to video recording and editing equipment\u2026.both of which I currently have no experience with.\u00a0 (And this is where I take a deep breath and step forward bravely in the hope of learning something new and potentially very useful!).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"> References:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chickering, A &amp; Ehrmann, S.\u00a0 (1996).\u00a0 <em>Implementing the seven principles:\u00a0 Technology as lever<\/em>.\u00a0 American Association for Higher Education Bulletin, 49(2), p. 3-6.<\/p>\n<p><em>International Society for Technology in Education<\/em>.\u00a0 (2008).\u00a0 National educational technology standards for teachers.\u00a0 Retrieved May 12, 2011 from http:\/\/www.iste.org\/standards\/nets-for-teachers\/nets-for-teachers-2008.aspx<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am an instructor in a college vocational program.\u00a0 Each year I teach several face to face courses, a lot of online courses (using Moodle), and one blended course.\u00a0 I also supervise practicums (for education assistants, early childhood educators, and human service workers).
